Before I Leave Palo Duro

This first day of my trip was interesting.  I passed thru Bastrop, Texas where they had the devastating fires a couple of years ago.  So I pulled over (70 to 0 in 3 seconds) to take a picture.  The devastation is still there, but the vegetation is coming back.  These next pictures were taken with the Nikon P600 (24-1440 zoom) and include a couple of more pictures from Palo Duro.

Bastrop fire along Texas 71

Passing thru a water crossing, I spotted this outcropping of rock.
Of course it was into the sun, but I couldn't resist.

Lighthouse Rock was visible from the visitor center using
their telescope inside the gift shop (by the way, a great gift shop).
After I left the canyon because of the sun going lower than the
rim of the canyon, I took this picture from another rim.  The 1440
aspect of the Nikon paid off on this hand held shot.

This view is from the visitor's center as I was entering the park.
I find that the powers-that-be usually place the visitor's centers with
a very good view!

Almost the same shot as above with clouds over part of the canyon.
Why this photo?  When you click to enlarge the photo, you will
see telephone poles along the bottom of the canyon.  A little
prospective of the vastness of this Texas wonder.

What I have learned over the years is to get off the main Interstate Highways (except for transitions) and see our country's back roads.  They are usually less traveled and offer many more interesting photo ops that reflect the diversity and flavor of the area.  Next up...Amarillo, Texas to Durango, Colorado........
